Inspired by the 8th-century Shosoin storehouse, architect Tomoaki Uno designed this guest house to float above its crowded tourist site on wooden pilotis. The innovative structure eschews traditional bracing and load-bearing walls, instead using epoxy resin anchors to create rigid joints between pillars and foundation. This contemporary interpretation of historical Japanese architecture creates a serene elevated space while accommodating parking below. The design process focused on precise dimensioning of the pillars to achieve both structural integrity and visual harmony – illustrated here in true colour.
