From the Middle Ages on, the mosaic pavements seen during classical antiquity have become rare, replaced by colored or decorated earthenware. Individual tiles have been here analyzed for their patterns, colors, shapes to reveal how a pattern or theme may have spread in a given time and place. Paintings of the French Historic Monuments institute together with recently uncovered archaeological discoveries are the basis of this volume, which is limited to the Champagne region. Shorts texts present the history of tile, including their design in the Middle Ages. Surveys and color photographs together with an indentification table follow, the book culminating with a catalog of over 200 patterns, including rossettes, animal motifs, borders, patterns of all kinds.
