The images gathered here create a canopy that is rich in meaning and which contributes to a debate about the separation between artistic savoir faire and the scientific understanding of nature and its spiritual, cultural, and political implications. The tree is a powerful subject in this respect, raising questions about the purpose of our civilisation and its relationship with nature. After all, the tree needs our unconditional protection as a key element in a balanced biodiversity. Organised as part of the PhotoBrussels Festival 06, this catalogue appears with the 2022 group exhibition ‘In the Shadow of Trees’, featuring seventeen photographers and the three festival prize-winners.
